Edison NJ sports recreation center project resumes

May 10, 2023

EDISON – The township is again seeking bids for the construction of the new sports recreation facility, just a little more than a month after the initial bids for the Central Avenue project exceeded the $5 million estimate.

Bids for the Edison Township Sports Building, where work will involve the removal of the existing buildings and trailers at the Edison Jets Field, 370 Central Ave., and the construction of the new sports facility, including architectural, structural and site work, are due to the township purchasing agent by July 11.

A pre-bid conference for the proposal will be held 11 a.m. June 20 at the site.

According to public documents, the new facility will be a pre-engineered metal building with a surrounding one- or two-story podium structure is framed of steel columns, steel beams and a composite metal deck slab. Both structures will be supported on concrete shallow foundations, the documents say.

The heating, ventilation and air conditioning system will be dedicated for a sports area with high occupancy, as well as providing traditional systems for office and storage areas, according to the documents. The heating will be provided with an air source heat pump and supplemental hot water heater and the electrical system will include a dedicated transformer and emergency generator, the documents say.

The building will be equipped with new connections to water and sewer utilities as well as a fire alarm and sprinkler system, the documents say.

Other project plans include construction of a concrete sidewalk, drainage improvements, relocating the water and sanitary sewer systems, lighting, retaining walls, parking lot improvements and other site restoration work, according to the documents.

The project is scheduled to be completed 460 days after the contract award and receipt of the notice to proceed, according to the documents.

The facility is slated to have two rooftop viewing decks overlooking the Jets’ field.

The building is slated to be used for cheerleading, wrestling, football, basketball, lacrosse and other activities year-round.

In April the Township Council rejected three bids for the project because two exceeded the township's cost estimate and a third did not meet the project's specifications. The township has earmarked $5 million for the project.
